Roslyn Premont Lali - Director Since opening Gallery Gondwana in Alice Springs in 1990, Roslyn Premont has worked hard to nurture Australian Aboriginal artists with different and intriguing styles and to find a market for their works. She has consistently worked with a small core group of artists from the Central and Western Deserts, supporting and encouraging their individual talents.' I feel privileged to work closely with the artists and educate non-Indigenous people about Aboriginality and Aboriginal art.' Roslyn became involved in Australian Aboriginal art more than 20 years ago, on her return to Australia from Paris, where she worked at the Australian Embassy. She was so inspired by artists such as Yirrkala bark painter Wandjuk Marika and ceramist Thancoupie - whom she met when taking Aboriginal elders to meet Kanak people in New Caledonia - she became determined to work in Aboriginal art. Roslyn came to Alice Springs in 1987, managing the Centre for Aboriginal Art for three years before opening her own gallery. Established in 1990 Gallery Gondwana has continuously recognised and actively supported the vitality of the contemporary art of Indigenous cultures. Some 1500kms from any major city, Gallery Gondwana is located in Alice Springs, the desert heart of Australia, and the birthplace of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement. Primarily representing artists from the Western and Central Desert, many of whom produce their work in our Alice Springs studio, the Gallery extends its exhibitions program to encompass the diversity of other regions. Gallery Gondwana is a central gathering point for art and artists and the visitors to it.
