Gallery Gondwana in conjunction with Maruku Arts begins its 2009
exhibition year with the Art of Docker River (Kaltukatjara), an
Aboriginal community scenically located in the Petermann Ranges
(the remnants of an ancient mountain range) in the south-west
corner of the Northern Territory and the adjacent borders of
Western Australia and South Australia.
Art of Docker River (Kaltukatjara) is the culmination of two
years work by Pitjantjatjara, Ngaanyatjarra and Ngaatjatjarra
artists from the above community and consists of an exciting
body of highly diverse, powerful and evocative paintings by some
sixteen artists, which include works by newly emerging painters
such as Arnold Teamay, Damien Cotchilli and Judy Jackson as well
as several long standing and highly accomplished artists such as
Ronnie Allen, Sandy Willie, Wanatjura Bell & Jim Nyukuti, all of
whom formerly pursued successful careers as carvers and weavers,
exhibiting both nationally & internationally.
In depicting subjects of the Dreaming, Aboriginal Law and
stories of the Mythological Ancestors, Docker River
(Kaltukatjara) artists draw not only upon their artistic
innovation and general creativity, but also incorporate
knowledge of their ancestors´ traditional practices such as rock
engravings, body and ground designs and decorated ceremonial
objects. originally set up in the early 1980´s to coordinate,
market, promote and collect Aboriginal art, craft and
traditional artifacts.
Exhibition Dates: Sat 18 April - Sat 9 May 2009
Opening: Saturday 3:00pm.
