Kathleen Padoon Napanangka
Born around 1938 at Mungai, NT, Kathleen was a prominent artist from Balgo, represented by the Warlayirti Artists art centre. Kathleen frequently depicted her homeland south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert, known as 'Nakarra Nakarra.'
In her artwork, Kathleen illustrated significant areas for her family, particularly the Nakarra Nakarra region, which is central to the Seven Sisters Dreaming. This story involves seven sisters traveling across the ancestral landscape, fleeing from an old man who wishes to marry the youngest sister.
At Nakarra Nakarra, a group of hills symbolises the seven sisters. The red blocks of colour depict the women dancing.
Kathleen passed away in 2019. Her work is held in prestigious collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria.
