Young Timothy Dempsey Tjungurrayi
Born at Hassts Bluff c. 1941, Young Timothy Dempsey Tjungurrayi is the older brother of Barney Daniels, with whom he shares his country, which is close to their mother's country in the Papunya-Napperby area. The artist gives his tribal affiliation as Luritja. Timothy received some schooling at Narwietooma station. He worked as a stockman then as a mechanic on bore maintenance before settling in Papunya in the early 60's, helping in the transfer of people from Hassts Bluff to the new settlement. At Papunya, he was introduced to painting in 1985 by watching Clifford Possum, with whom he shared a camp. He is also related to artist Mary Dixon. He lives near his traditional country on "Five Mile" outstation near Papunya and paints Centipede, Spear Ceremony, Barking Spider (Mampururnpa) and Hunting for Kangaroo Dreamings. He paints occasionally for Papunya Tula Artists as well as the Centre for Aboriginal Artists, Alice Springs.
