Dhopiya Yunupiŋu

Dhopiya Yunupiŋu (c.1945–2022) was a highly respected Yolŋu elder, artist, and weaver from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land. A Gumatj woman and the youngest of the renowned Yunupingu sisters, she was the daughter of Mungurrawuy Yunupingu and sister to leaders including Galarrwuy and Mandawuy Yunupingu.

Working across bark painting, printmaking, ceramic vessels, weaving, and larrakitj (memorial poles), Yunupiŋu’s practice reflected deep cultural knowledge, particularly the long relationship between the Yolŋu people and Makassan seafarers from south-west Sulawesi. Central to her work was galiku —a yellow cloth traditionally used for sails and flags and still worn in ceremony—through which she acknowledged the enduring Makassan influence on Yolŋu economy, society, and cultural life
