Barramundi etching by Glen Namundja 19x14cm in black frame
This original, hand-printed limited etching is by Glen Namundja, a passionate artist who draws on great cultural integrity for inspiration in his work. He has a large repertoire and his works can reveal a simple but beautiful aesthetic. His barramundi in Series 1 of the Collector's Folios has been painted in a traditional x-ray style, which shows part of the skeleton of the fish. The etching was made during a workshop at the rock art sites of Injalak HIll, Oenpelli, conducted by Basil Hall in 2005.
He can also produce extraordinarily intense works, such as those depicting the creator spirit, Ngalyod intertwined in a billabong scene. These pieces utilise complex overlays and an extensive rarrk (cross hatching) technique which challenge the casual observer's eye to follow the image across the medium.
Glen's language is Kunwinjku and he lives and works in wester Arnhem Land. He works primarily in ochres on bark or paper, and his paintings have been featured in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards and in numerous exhbitions in Australia and Europe.
