Product Details

This beautiful cultural gift is an original, hand-printed limited etching is by Lofty Bardayal Nadjamerrek who is regarded as the last of the great rock artists of western Arnhem Land. Born in 1926 he paints less frequently these days and lives at his outstation, Gamarrgawan, in the stone country, and Gunbalanya. He was selected in the National Gallery of Australia's landmark exhibition, Culture Warriors and he is a regular participant and one-time winner of the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.

The image in his print is Dulklorrkelorrken, a spirit who lives in the hollows of trees in open forest (not near the water). When it rains, these spirits drink the water laying in the hollow log and make people who they come across become confused or go insane. When people get lost in the bush, they believe that Dulklorrkelorrken is to blame.

Medium: Etching and aquatint, edition: 100, Plate drawn and Etched: Darwin, December, 2007

Handprinted by: Jacqueline Gribbin at Basil Hall Editions, Darwin for the Collectors Edition.
