Mungada (apple) 1999 by Eunice Jack Napanangka, Arches Paper, 56x76cm
"Mungada (Apple) 1999" by Eunice Jack Napanangka is a vibrant, original artwork on arches paper. This piece, with provenance from Ikuntji Artists #IK99EJ48, showcases Eunice's unique artistic vision.
Born in 1940 at Lupul in the Sir Frederick Ranges, Eunice's early years were marked by her family's migration eastwards due to food shortages, a journey vividly remembered as her mother carried her piggyback from Western Australia to Haasts Bluff. Today, Eunice is a respected figure in her community, known for her hunting skills, dancing, and traditional law knowledge.
Eunice began painting in 1992 with the opening of the Ikuntji Women’s Centre. Before this, in the 1970s, she assisted her husband, Gideon Tjupurrula Jack, at Papunya Tula. Her artwork interprets her country near Lake Mackay, using layers of colour to depict bush flowers, grasses, and personal stories, including the travels of her tjukurrpa – the Bilby.
Her father, Tutuma Tjapangarti, was among the first to paint for Papunya Tula, and Eunice also paints his country, including Tjukurla, Tjila, Kurulto, and Lupul. Eunice's vibrant works, such as Hairstring, Tali (sandhill), Mungada (apple), and wildflower paintings, highlight her brilliant use of colour and dedication to her traditions. Highly collectible, Eunice's art is featured in leading galleries worldwide.
