Amelia Turner – Angangkere, Traditional Healer and Cultural Leader

Amelia Turner was born and raised in Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa). She attended school there and in Melbourne before living in Maningrida for a decade. Coming from a family of senior cultural leaders, Amelia follows in their footsteps as a respected cultural leader, traditional healer ( Angangkere ), and artist. She also serves on multiple boards.

For over four years, Amelia has been a key supporter of Akeyulerre’s Angkwerre-Iweme (Traditional Healing) Project. In 2013, she won a Natural Resource Management Award for a collaborative project with the Central Land Council on traditional ecological knowledge. The following year, she was named Indigenous Person of the Year by the Alice Springs NAIDOC Week Committee for her dedication to community service.

Her poetry is featured in Arelhekenhe Angkentye: Women’s Talk (Running Water Community Press), where she also serves as a board director. This initiative is the world’s first author-owned and operated cooperative publisher.
