Ngapa Jukurrpa by Rosie Nangala Fleming, 46x30cm

This is a delightful rendition of the Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) associated with Puyurru. In the Dreaming an old woman cried and her tears became the clouds and the rain that filled the waterholes and provided the life-giving force of water. The waterholes are depicted by the turquoise roundels and the golden and soft pink ochre colours symbolise the surrounding terrain.

Rosie Nangala Fleming (c. 1928–2015) was a senior custodian and law keeper with a strong knowledge of Warlpiri language culture. Her work is held in major collections, including the Seattle Art Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries.
