Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) by Sabrina Nangala Robertson – Aboriginal Painting from Yuendumu

This important painting, Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) by Warlpiri artist Sabrina Nangala Robertson, represents a significant tradition of Western Desert Aboriginal art from Yuendumu, one of the most influential painting communities in Central Australia. Works depicting the Water Dreaming are highly regarded in the history of Indigenous Australian art, and paintings from this lineage are sought after by collectors worldwide.

The story relates to Mikanji, a normally dry creek west of Yuendumu, where sacred mulju (soakages) lie hidden beneath the creek bed. In Warlpiri law, this Dreaming belongs to Jangala / Jampijinpa men and Nangala / Nampijinpa women, who are the custodians of the ceremonies and songs associated with this country.

Sabrina Nangala Robertson paints using the distinctive visual language of the Yuendumu and Western Desert painting movement, with concentric circles symbolising waterholes and soakages, and fine dotting suggesting mangkurdu (rain clouds) gathering before a storm. The Dreaming tells of a rain ancestor travelling from Puyurru to Mikanji, where two Nampijinpa women sat beside the soakages. When the storm broke, their tears became rain, forming a lasting spiritual presence that remains in two ngapiri (river red gum trees) near the site.

Sabrina is the daughter of celebrated artist Dorothy Napangardi and sister of Julie Nangala Robertson, continuing one of the most respected artistic families to emerge from Yuendumu. Her work reflects both strong cultural authority and a refined contemporary style, placing her among the important younger painters working within the Warlpiri painting tradition.

Paintings of this quality form part of the carefully selected collection of authentic Aboriginal art offered by Gallery Gondwana, specialising in significant works by leading artists from the Western Desert and Central Australia.
