Stars by Gulumbu Yunupingu Framed Etching
This limited edition etching titled Stars is by Gulumbu Yunupingu, the elder sister of Galarrwuy Yunupingu (former Northern Land Council Chair) and Mandawuy Yunupingu (lead singer of the band Yothu Yindi). Both have been Australians of the Year. Media used by Gulumbu include jewellery weaving and painting on bark, larrakitj (hollow logs) and yidaki (didjeridoos).
In 2000 her work was represented at the World Expo in Hanover, Germany. She won the overall First Prize at the 2004 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards and has since had sell-out shows of her prints in Darwin, at the Garma Festival and in Melbourne.
A major achievement was to be selected as one of 8 Indigenous artists whose work was extensively featured in the new Musee du Quai Branly, Paris. The ceiling on which her imagery was painted also features the stars she has etched on her plate for this etching.
