Product Details

Barney Campbell Tjakamarra (c.1928–2009) was a revered Pintupi elder, senior lawman and founding member of Papunya Tula Artists. His paintings reflect his profound knowledge of ancestral law, ceremony and the sacred geography of his Country.

Central to his artistic practice was the Tingari Cycle, which recounts the journeys of ancestral beings during the Dreaming creation era. As the Tingari ancestors travelled across the Western Desert, they shaped the landscape, establishing sacred sites, ceremonial practices and the laws that continue to guide Pintupi cultural life. These journeys are preserved through ancient song cycles, with much of their deeper meaning remaining sacred and restricted to initiated men.

In Tingari Cycle (2005), Tjakamarra evokes sites associated with Malliera, the initiation ceremonies through which young men are introduced to ancestral knowledge and cultural responsibilities.

The powerful interplay of black and white geometric forms creates a mesmerising optical rhythm, suggesting a heightened spiritual dimension experienced through ceremony. Tjakamarra often painted while singing ancestral songs in his own language, reinforcing the inseparable relationship between his art, Country and cultural knowledge.

His work is represented in major Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. His artistic legacy stands as a powerful expression of cultural continuity and the enduring authority of Pintupi ancestral traditions.
