Wataki (Bush Orange Dreaming) 1998 by Polly Napangardi Watson
Acrylic on canvas, 150 × 90 cm

This vibrant painting by Warlpiri Aboriginal artist Polly Napangardi Watson depicts the Wataki (Bush Orange) Dreaming, celebrating the abundance of bush oranges that grow across Warlpiri Country in the desert regions approximately 380 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs.

Painted with a rich and energetic palette, the composition reflects the colours and vitality of the desert landscape following seasonal rains, when native fruits appear across the sandhills and spinifex plains. The wataki, or bush orange, is an important traditional bush food gathered by Aboriginal people and closely connected to knowledge of Country and seasonal cycles.

Using the aerial perspective characteristic of Western Desert Aboriginal painting, Watson maps the landscape through rhythmic dotting and flowing forms that suggest the spread of the fruit across the desert terrain. The lively movement and vibrant colour create a strong sense of vitality, evoking the richness and life of the desert environment.

Through her intricate dotting and dynamic compositions, Polly Napangardi Watson transforms this celebration of seasonal abundance into a powerful expression of Warlpiri Country, culture and Western Desert Aboriginal art.
