Susie Nawarrey Peterson – Wutunugurra and the Essence of Country
Susie Nawarrey Peterson is an acclaimed Indigenous Australian artist known for her breathtaking depictions of Wutunugurra, the land of her birth. Born in 1965, Peterson continues to reside in Wutunugurra, a remote community in the Davenport Ranges (Iytwelepenty), located in the Barkly Region of Central Australia, southeast of Tennant Creek.
Her artwork, particularly her piece "Wutunugurra", beautifully captures the epic landscapes of this sacred region—where mighty rivers, ancient forests, and rugged hills form a unique ecosystem rich with species found nowhere else. This vast area, covering over 5,000 square kilometers, is a significant boundary between the traditional lands of the Warumungu, Alyawarr, and Kaytetye peoples.
A Master of Landscape Painting
Peterson has played a pivotal role in mentoring young Indigenous painters, inspiring them with her ability to translate the power and spirit of her homeland onto canvas. Since 2000, she has explored various artistic forms, including silk painting, before fully dedicating herself to painting in 2012. Over the years, she has developed a distinctive style, celebrated for its dynamic representation of the semi-arid to sub-tropical terrain of the Davenport Ranges
