Yam Dreaming, 2011 by Marilyn Golder Kngwarreye(89 x 151 cm)
Utopia artist and custodian of an enduring Anmatyerre story

In this radiant painting, Marilyn Golder Kngwarreye depicts the leaves and delicate flowers of the bush yam, a vital desert plant that flourishes after seasonal rain. The tubers of this plant are a key food source for Anmatyerre people, and the Yam Dreaming is central to their cultural identity, law, and storytelling traditions.

Born in 1980 in the Utopia region of Central Australia, Marilyn Golder belongs to a lineage of renowned artists. She is the granddaughter of senior artist Polly Ngale and shares deep familial and cultural ties with the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye, one of Australia's most celebrated contemporary painters. Like Emily, Marilyn holds custodial rights to the Yam Dreaming, and her work continues a rich artistic legacy rooted in Country, ceremony, and ancestral knowledge.
